Development of robust information structures

This project combines the work of computer scientists, communication scientists and political scientists. Its goal is to analyze and tackle threats to information systems to allow people to develop a less biased vision of reality. Using cutting-edge computational and social techniques, the project focuses on the spread of mis/disinformation, incivility/hate speech, and polarization, and seeks to devise interventions to counter these threats. This project aims to improve Truthfulness by diagnosing the spread of misinformation in social networks, and Fairness by studying and proposing solutions to possible biases in data and algorithms.

Disinformation Study in Chile

The “Study on disinformation on social media and its effect on pluralism and the media agenda” (PLU 210012) is the first characterization of content and distribution channels of disinformation on social platforms in Chile.

Through a quantitative analysis of content reproduction trees on social networks and the qualitative analysis of actors in the Chilean media system, patterns were identified that will be of service to the media, specialized verification initiatives, and citizens to learn about and make visible the magnitude of the phenomenon of Disinformation and thus limit its spread.

The results of the study showed the relevance of the phenomenon of disinformation in Chile during the period analyzed, with evident effects on social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The study also shows the effect of this content on the media agenda and proposes some ways of working to limit the harmful effect of this content in Chile.
